New Parent’s Guide to Childproofing

New Parent’s Guide to Childproofing at Kids 'R' Kids Suwanee, preschool, daycare, childcare

If your child is a newborn and immobile, the need to childproof your home may seem a far way off.  However, that little baby will grow and learn quickly and will be mobile before you know it!  Childproofing is a big job and can be time consuming, so begin as soon as possible.

Small Steps

Break childproofing into small steps and work your way through the house room by room.  Walk through each room and make a list of items that need to be safeguarded.  Once you have done a walk through of each room, try seeing the room from an infant or toddler’s point of view by crawling on the floor.  You may notice items (i.e. cords, outlets, etc.) you don’t notice while at an adult’s height.  Now that you have a list of items needing attention you can start working on the rooms you find the most crucial.

Secure Furniture

Any furniture that could be tipped over should be secured to the wall using anchors.  This includes dressers, bookcases, television stands, televisions, or any large pieces of furniture which could be tipped over by a child.

Chemicals

Children do not understand the dangers of ingesting non-food items or medications.  Therefore, any medications or items which are toxic should be put out of a child’s reach or locked up where the child cannot access them.

Cords

You will also want to ensure curtains and blinds do not have drawstrings your little one can get tangled in, as any hanging cords are a strangulation hazard.  Cords to electronic devices can be dangerous, as well.  Your little one could get tangled in electrical cords or could use those cords to pull heavy electronics onto themself.

Outlets

Outlets are another danger for children. You will want to get covers to ensure little fingers or items held by little fingers cannot be pushed into the outlets.  Self-closing socket plugs are a great option, as they are easily opened by an adult and do not become a choking hazard if your little one removes it.

Prevent Falls

It is recommended to place baby gates at the top and bottom of stairs to prevent your child from climbing up, and then falling down the stairs. Additionally, place safeguards on any windows in which a child could fall through the screen.

This list is not all-inclusive and each home is different.  For more tips or information on childproofing, check out these tips from The New York Times or Parent Magazine.
