How to Help Your Preschooler’s Attention Span Grow

How to Help Your Preschooler’s Attention Span Grow at Kids 'R' Kids Suwanee, preschool, daycare, childcare

The amount of time an individual is able to devote focus to an activity is referred to as attention span.  Children can typically be expected to have an attention span equal to two or three minutes per year of age.  There are ways to help your preschooler grow her attention span and get ready for school!

Focus Games

Games are a great way to increase attention span.  Your preschooler will need to track turns, dice rolls, and moves while playing board games.  Through simple games, such as I Spy with My Little Eye or Simon Says, your child will be required to listen for descriptions or directions to participate in the game.

Limit Screen Time

It is difficult to completely avoid screen time in today’s society.  However, it has been proven that too much screen time can damage a child’s attention span.  Shows created for children are typically brightly colored and contain fast paced music and movement.  Over time your preschooler’s brain will adapt to processing information at that fast pace and have difficulty processing information provided in a natural setting.

Read

Reading with your child not only helps build her attention span, but also builds her vocabulary, fuels her imagination, and strengthens the bond between you and your preschooler.  If your preschooler struggles to sit through longer stories, read a portion of the story, stop for a brain break, and then finish the story.

Healthy Habits

Providing your preschooler with a variety of healthy foods, physical activity, and a healthy sleep schedule can help him perform at his highest levels.  Focus on foods that fuel your preschooler’s mind and body, such as those mentioned here.  Incorporate plenty of opportunities for your preschooler to be physically active, so he isn’t antsy when completing an activity.  Take breaks during longer activities for your preschooler to move around and get his wiggles out.  Adhering to a daily routine with a specific bedtime and wake time will help your preschooler know what to expect and adjust to activities more quickly and assure he gets plenty of sleep.
