Playing with Your Food for Preschoolers

Playing with Your Food for Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Suwanee, preschool, daycare, childcare

Preschoolers can be picky when it comes to eating.  Sometimes it just takes a bit of creativity to make healthy foods more fun and enticing.

Owl Toast

Toast a slice of whole wheat bread, half an English muffin, or half a bagel.  Help your preschooler spread a layer of nut butter or cream cheese on one side of the toasted bread of choice.  Place two banana slices and raisins at the top of the bread to create the owl’s eyes.  Your preschooler can now arrange round oat cereal on the owl’s body to mimic feathers.  Finally, add a couple apple slices or sliced strawberries on the sides for wings.

Fruit and Veggie Caterpillars

After cleaning and cutting celery stalks, assist your preschooler in spreading nut butter or cream cheese into the large indented side of the celery piece.  Ask your preschooler to arrange grapes or cherry tomatoes that have been cut in half on top of the nut butter or cream cheese to create the segments of the caterpillar’s body.  Use a dab of nut butter or cream cheese to add chocolate chip eyes or use candy eyes from the baking section at your local store.

Cracker and Pretzel Spiders

Spread nut butter on one side of a round cracker and stack another cracker on top, making a sandwich.  Break pretzel sticks in half and stick them into the nut butter along each side of the crackers to create legs.  Use a bit of nut butter to adhere a couple chocolate chips as eyes.

Hot Dog Mummies

Wrap strips of canned crescent dough around a hot dog to resemble the bandages on a mummy.  Bake the hot dog in the oven until the dough and the hot dog are cooked all the way through.  Serve with whatever dipping sauce your preschooler prefers with hot dogs.

Cookie Cutter Sandwiches

This tip is super simple!  Using fun shaped cookie cutters to cut your preschooler’s favorite sandwich into fun shapes can turn a typical lunch into a fun lunch!  Try using a variety of small cookie cutters to allow your preschooler to make several bite sized sandwiches in fun shapes.

Fruit Kabobs

This snack requires supervision while enjoyed, since the skewers can be dangerous for a preschooler.  Choose two or three of your preschooler’s favorite fruits and cut them into bite sized pieces.  Alternate the fruit onto a skewer to create a fruit kabob.  You can add miniature marshmallows to the mix to make it even more enticing.
