National Poetry Month: Teaching Your Child the Basics of Poetry

For National Poetry Month, consider introducing your preschooler to poetry! While they won’t be ready to read Shakespeare’s sonnets, they can begin learning the basics of poetry and building a foundation for later in life. Check out our ideas below for introducing poetry to your child.

Rhyming

Even young children can begin learning to rhyme. Start off saying a word and go back and forth with your child saying words that rhyme with the first one. If they can’t think of any or are having a hard time, just have them repeat the rhyming words you are saying. Another fun rhyming activity is singing familiar nursery rhymes and pointing out which words rhyme.

Visual Poetry

This is a great way for your child to begin writing his or her “own” poetry. Work on writing a poem and leave a few words blank for your child to fill in. For instance, write a poem about your day and the last line could say, “_______ was my favorite part of today!” Your child can play a part in writing of the poem and practice the rhyming skills they learned!

Acrostics

Acrostic poetry is one of the simplest forms of poetry and is really easy and fun for children! Have them write their names out vertically, with one letter on top of the next. Then, help them come up with a word that describes them that starts with each letter of their name. They might need help thinking of words or writing them, but they will still be getting comfortable with poetry.

These three ideas will help expose your child to poetry, which is a perfect way to celebrate National Poetry Month! Your child might not grow up to become a poet, but learning about and practicing poetry will help them develop the literacy needed to become strong readers!
