Chores for Preschoolers

Chores for Preschoolers

As a parent of a preschooler, the days where your child is grown up can seem so far away. Yet, it is a constant losing fight against time to try and keep them young, and no matter what you seem to do, they just keep growing and growing.  But that’s how life goes, and sometimes all you can do is encourage them along their journey and make sure that they are prepared for whatever comes next. Teaching them responsibility and encouraging them towards independence is a huge part of their development, and there is no better way than to start them with chores at a young age. Here are some reasons and ideas for how to introduce them to the idea:

Teaching them Ownership

A good first step to teach them responsibility is the idea of ownership. When you own something that entails the idea that you have to take care of it. Your child will have his toys and his room and his clothes but might not necessarily have an idea that those things need to be taken care of. Instead of picking up after your preschooler, instill the idea that those things don’t clean themselves up. Suddenly it makes your job a lot easier, while also teaching you kid to value the things that they have.

Include Them in the Things you Already Do

As impressionable as kids are at a preschool age, they are going to be taking a lot of cues from you. So set an example, have them join you in the chores you already do, and make it something that the two of you do together. By taking a step to not overcorrect or fix every mess they make or thing they do, instead include them in the process of fixing it. Have your preschooler help you make their bed, have them help you roll up the Play-Doh, have them help clear off the table. Then it’s not a boring chore, but an expectation and just a small part of being part of the family.  By setting an expectation, you are teaching a responsibility and ownership without completely outcasting them to weed the garden by themselves.
