Teaching Your Preschooler About Thanksgiving

thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a great opportunity to teach our children about the heart of thankfulness. Before you sit down for Thanksgiving dinner, try out some of these ideas to teach your child about the holiday!

Talk About the Meaning of Thanksgiving

Go back in time and teach your child about how a difficult fall harvest brought together very different people, Pilgrims and Native Americans, to celebrate. If you’re stuck, check out the many different children’s books that talk about the origin of the holiday. This will help your child grow in understanding and appreciation of Thanksgiving!

Talk About Your Feast

At the Thanksgiving dinner table, talk with your family about where each of the dishes came from. Let everyone go around and share what their favorite was. Next year, encourage your preschooler to help make their favorite dish!

Thanksgiving Journal

The family-favorite tradition around here is the Thanksgiving Journal! This is a great way to record the blessings in our lives and be able to look back at them year after year. At the top of the first page of a journal, write the year. Then, have each of your Thanksgiving guests write their name and what they are thankful for this year. Next year, do the same and keep the tradition alive. You will love bringing the reason for Thanksgiving to the forefront of everyone’s minds!

Share & Donate

Giving back to your community is a great way to embody the Thanksgiving spirit! Ideas include donating Thanksgiving dinner to a family who couldn’t afford it, or bringing pies to celebrate the holiday with senior citizens. Whatever you choose, make it a tradition! Putting an emphasis on giving back to others honors the Thanksgiving holiday and creates hearts of thankfulness in our little ones.

We hope these ideas will bless your family this holiday season and teach them the meaning of Thanksgiving. Children who understand the holiday will grow to have a greater appreciation for it!
