Seasonal Changes – Springtime with Your Preschooler

Seasonal Changes – Springtime with Your Preschooler

After a long, cold winter, the longer days and warmer sunshine of spring are welcome sights to teachers and parents of active preschoolers! There are so many great learning opportunities and spring-inspired activities to keep your toddlers and preschoolers engaged and active while learning about growth and seasonal transitions!

Sensory Bin

Make a spring sensory bin to keep your preschooler busy and entertained. This is especially great for younger kids and toddlers. Go to a dollar store for all of the components of this project. Dry black beans, Fiori pasta noodles colored to look like flowers (use food coloring or washable markers in another activity with your child), and plastic bugs in a plastic bin will create a spring sensory garden. Encourage free play or structure this activity by having your preschooler find all the bugs and count them. This activity could also be done with colorful water beads.

Egg Carton Flowers

Egg carton flowers are not only a great spring craft (and a perfect Mother’s Day gift activity) but this activity will teach your preschooler about recycling and reusing materials instead of throwing them away! Cut a cardboard egg carton into sections of four “petals” and let your preschooler paint the carton with acrylic pants. Use springy pastels and bright colors to create beautiful floral creations. Glue a bright pom pom to the flower’s center, and use a paper straw as a “stem.”

Signs of Spring

Signs of spring start showing up everywhere! Talk with your preschooler about what we see outdoors that show us spring is on its way. Point out green leaves, new plant growth, colorful flowers, and make a list of these springtime signs. Then, go on a scavenger hunt and nature walk outdoors and see how many signs of spring you can find together! This is a great way to enjoy warmer days, too!
