Help your preschooler develop positive thinking this September in honor of Positive Thinking Day! Practicing positive thinking can be really helpful if you find your preschooler has a bit of a negative attitude toward himself and others.
Instead of I can’t… I believe!
Encourage your child to believe in himself if you hear him exhibit this oft-said phrase. When children attempt a new skill and don’t experience immediate success, it can contribute to an attitude of self-doubt and discouragement. Encourage children to change their mindset by repeating, “I believe!” instead of “I can’t!” Help them problem solve to complete the task or practice the skill.
What makes them unique?
The book We Are All Wonders is a great book to read with your preschooler. After you read, the book includes an activity to talk about what makes you unique. Ask your preschooler to talk about what makes him unique and different from his friends. Extend the activity by helping your child identify what makes his friends unique.
Practice positive affirmations.
Start each day with positive affirmations with your preschooler. Pinterest is full of positive affirmations to practice with your children. In the car, or when you first wake up, practice positive thinking with your preschooler.
Use post it notes.
When you catch your child doing something good, write it down and post it where they can see it. Remind them regularly of the great things you see them do every day!
Discuss the change of thinking in movie characters.
Watch Moana or Cars 3 and discuss the change in thinking that Moana and Cruz go through to accomplish their goals. Talk to your preschooler about what they can change to accomplish their own goals!
