It’s February already and that means Valentine’s Day is right around the corner! We can take some cues from Valentine’s Day this month when we plan activities for our preschooler. Here are some fun and festive craft ideas for your children, using items you have on hand or can grab on your next grocery run!
To make a cute heart-shaped bird feeder, mix together ¾ cup flour, ½ cup water, an envelope of gelatin, three tablespoons of corn syrup, and four cups of birdseed. Spray the inside of a heart-shaped cookie cutter with cooking spray and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Pack in the birdseed mixture and use a straw to create a hole near the top. Help your child remove the cookie cutter while you hold down the birdseed mixture. Let the bird feeders sit overnight. Tie some string through the hole and hang it in a tree! Your child will love looking out the window to watch the birds eat from the feeder. Use the leftover bird feeders as a sweet gift for neighbors or teachers!
Use construction paper to cut out heart shapes. Then, provide your children with q-tips and washable paint to decorate the shapes. Inexpensive cotton swabs allow your children to make dots, mix colors, and work on fine motor skills while painting. When your children are finished, hang them around the house or write a note on the back for a friend or sibling.
We love crafts that double as toys when they are finished! Cut small heart shapes out of a cereal box or other piece of cardboard. Attach the heart to a popsicle stick using glue and let your child decorate! They can use whatever you have on hand. Our favorites are pom-poms, googly eyes, glitter glue, and paint!
Helping your children with these simple and fun Valentine’s crafts will create special memories for your family and leave you, and your home, feeling festive!
