Teaching Your Preschooler About Independence Day

Independence Day

If you asked a preschooler about Independence Day, they would probably mention red, white, and blue or fireworks! However, does your preschooler know the meaning behind Independence Day? Keep reading for some of our favorite ideas to teach your child about this upcoming holiday!

The Meaning of the 4th of July

Take a few minutes before your family’s Fourth of July festivities to tell your child about the meaning of the holiday. Independence Day is the day the thirteen colonies officially separated from Great Britain and the rule of their king by signing the Declaration of Independence. Fifty-six men signed it on July 4, 1776 and we celebrate our freedom and patriotism on July 4th every year!

The American Flag

Around the 4th of July, there are flag-themed things everywhere! The next time you see something flag-related, talk to your child about the meaning of the American flag. Tell them about how the fifty states are represented by the fifty stars and the thirteen colonies are represented by the thirteen stripes. Make a flag craft or snack and show your child the old iterations of the American flag to round out the flag discussion and help them remember its meaning.

Patriotic Activities

To truly experience the meaning of the holiday, celebrate freedom and patriotism with your preschooler! Pool parties, parades, and fireworks are rampant on July 4th. For a unique and meaningful activity, find a way to give back to our nation’s soldiers! Some of our favorite ideas include putting flags up around the neighborhood, writing letters of thanks, or sending care packages to our nation’s soldiers.

Keep in mind the meaning of Independence Day and spend a few minutes sharing the meaning with your preschooler! It will make their experiences and memories from the holiday much more meaningful.
