Making Chores Fun For Preschoolers!

Making Chores Fun For Preschoolers!

Summertime is a great time to start teaching your preschooler about having chores and contributing to the work the family does to keep the house tidy, but it also teaches responsibility. Make chores a family affair and get your preschoolers excited about helping with mundane activities that will keep them occupied and get the house cleaned up.

Introduce daily chores as well as “whole family” chores. Putting away their toys by themselves once they’re done playing with them, putting away their laundry, or even scooping the pet’s food every morning will establish a routine that will continue even after school starts. Make this fun and incentivized at first, but emphasize that everyone in the family helps out, and this is how they contribute, even when it stops being “fun” or exciting!

Here are some other ways to make chores less of a chore with little ones:

  • Hide small treats or pennies to find when they are dusting/cleaning up, or set a timer and see who can pick up toys the fastest.
  • Make chore charts. List weekly chores and put a sticker next to each one that’s completed. Recognize the child with the most stickers at the end of the week as “The Biggest Helper”!
  • Music or podcasts. Play some family friendly podcasts or a favorite playlist to get your groove on while you all help clean up. For a great list of podcasts, visit this blog.
  • House cleaning can be a family event! Make laminated “Chores Bingo” cards, and the first person to make a Bingo wins!

It’s up to you whether you want to use allowance as an incentive. Remember though that kids this age just love being praised and feeling important! Small treats are also perfectly acceptable of course!
