Preschoolers are naturally curious and expressive—two qualities that make them perfect artists and thankful thinkers! This fall, combine both skills by making a gratitude tree with your child. It’s a craft project that grows little hearts full of appreciation.

Turn Gratitude into a Hands-On Activity

Start with a piece of poster board or recycled cardboard. Help your preschooler draw or paint a tree trunk and branches. Then, use construction paper to cut out leaves, or let your child trace their hands to make leaf shapes. Every day, add a new “thankful thought” to the tree.

Let your child guide the conversation. You might hear answers like “juice boxes,” “dance parties,” or “Mommy cuddles.” Whatever they say is perfect—it shows they’re learning to reflect and recognize joy.

Encourage drawing and decorating each leaf. Use glitter, ribbon, stickers, or anything else your preschooler loves. This keeps them engaged and helps develop fine motor skills while making the tree colorful and fun.

Make It a Special Memory

Hang your tree somewhere visible, like the fridge or a bedroom door. Over time, it becomes a visual record of all the blessings your family cherishes. Talk about the leaves together and celebrate the growing collection of kindness and gratitude.

This project is also a great way to encourage conversations around emotions, relationships, and appreciation for others. It builds a habit of gratitude early in life—something that benefits children far beyond the preschool years.

Watch Thankfulness Grow

Gratitude is something that can be taught, and preschoolers learn best through hands-on, heart-filled experiences. The gratitude tree is a fun, accessible way to make this important lesson stick.
