Cool Treats on Hot Days for Preschoolers

Cool Treats on Hot Days for Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Landstar, preschool, daycare, childcare

Summer is upon us with its beautiful colors, fresh air, and bright sunshine.  Because there is more sunlight, there is more time to head outdoors and work up a sweat.  This is the perfect recipe for a cool treat!  Below are three easy treats for you and your preschooler to make and enjoy together.

  1. Ice cream in a bag only requires five ingredients- half and half, salt, ice, vanilla, and sugar.  You will also need 2 Ziploc style bags (make sure they are good quality bags so that the salt does not get into the inner bag).  Mix one cup of half and half, 1 ½ teaspoons of vanilla extract, and one tablespoon of sugar in a small bag.  Make sure it is sealed well and all excess air is removed.  Fill the large bag about halfway with ice.  Add ¼ cup salt.  Place the small bag inside the larger bag and fill the larger bag with ice.  Close the large bag.  Wearing gloves, shake the bags for six minutes.  Take out the small bag and rinse the outside completely, especially near the seal.  Mix it up, add toppings if you would like, and enjoy!
  2. To make simple fruity popsicles, you will need popsicle molds, popsicle sticks (if the molds do not already have some), water flavoring packets, bottled water, and fruit.  Add the water flavoring packet to a bottle of water and shake.  Put your frozen fruit into the popsicle molds.  Pour the flavored water over it until full. Do not forget to add popsicle sticks if necessary.  Next, leave them in the freezer until solid.  When you are ready to eat them, rest the mold in some warm water in the sink for a minute or two before removing them. Yum!
  3. For a fresh and easy treat, make fruit kebabs.  Gather a variety of your favorite fresh summer fruits and berries.  Slice them up or cut into bite sized chunks.  Help your preschooler carefully build their own colorful skewer of fresh, cold fruit.  Find a comfortable place to sit and devour your tasty creations
