Helping Your Preschooler Develop Healthy Sleep Habits

Helping Your Preschooler Develop Healthy Sleep Habits at Kids 'R' Kids Landstar, preschool, daycare, childcare

Sleep is important for the whole family. Yet, if your preschooler is not getting enough sleep, it causes tension for the entire family. Here are some tips to help your child develop healthy sleep habits, for the sake of everyone!

Quieting Down…

Giving your preschooler ample notice that the bedtime routine will soon be starting may help alleviate any dramatic push-back from them. To start gearing your child up for bed, have them start to quiet down and refrain from active play.

Having a Consistent Routine…

This will look different for every family, but the key is to make the bedtime routine be consistent. Does your preschooler like to hear stories before bed or listen to soft music? Is there a favorite teeth-brushing song? Do you have a silly way of putting the stuffed animals to sleep before your child is in bed? The goal is to get your child to bed in a relaxed state. A calming and consistent routine helps set you up for success.

Dealing with Escapees…

If your preschooler likes to get out of bed once bedtime starts, be consistent with your game plan. Chances are that your preschooler is stalling the inevitable (sleep!) or is trying to get your attention at the wrong time. If they get out of bed, calmly walk them back to their bed and leave without showing any emotion. This makes leaving the bed less fun for your child!

A preschooler should be getting between 10-13 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period. It can be stressful to know if your child is getting the right amount of sleep, though! Here is what WebMD advises, “You can tell that children are getting enough sleep when they fall asleep within 15 to 30 minutes of going to bed, wake up easily in the morning, and don’t nod off during the day.”

Sleep problems are not ideal, but you are not alone if there are struggles! Be consistent with doing the right things, and sleep will one day come together nicely for your child.
