It is so much fun to watch preschoolers open gifts on Christmas morning. The excitement is just too much for them to contain, and their bright smiles cheer up everyone in the room! But, have you considered sharing with them the gift of giving? Thinking of and doing things for others will leave joy in their little hearts much longer than that new toy wrapped up under the tree!
Store bought gifts
You can teach your little ones about giving gifts right within your family. Most likely, your preschooler is not going to have a large budget for gift buying, but that is fine! If your preschooler wants to buy gifts for the people in your family, instead of just handing over the money, consider having him do some simple chores around the house to earn money for the presents he wants to buy. He can help empty the dishwasher, sweep the kitchen floor, fold towels, etc., to earn some money to buy gifts. Not only will this teach your preschooler the value of a dollar, but it will introduce him to being a contributor to the family.
Homemade gifts
Sometimes a homemade gift from a preschooler is all it takes to warm old Uncle Scrooge’s heart. Your child can make some festive greeting cards and mail them out to family and friends. If you have a little more time on your hands, you can have a crafting day and make holiday decorations and ornaments for loved ones. Many craft stores have prepackaged crafts sets that your little one can easily put together. Or, you can buy an ornament painting set and let him paint some wooden or plaster ornaments to hand out at your holiday get together. Let him experience the happiness his gifts bring to others by allowing him to give the gift and watch the recipient open it! After all, “It is better to give than to receive!”
