Involving a Preschool Child in Art

Involving a Preschool Child in Art at Kids 'R' Kids Landstar, preschool, daycare, childcare

Young children, preschoolers especially, love to unleash their imaginations and create new things. One of the best ways to do this is through art! If you’re looking for the right way to introduce your child to all things art, look no further. With these starter tips you can encourage your little one’s creativity and watch your child focus, relax, and express himself, all while using fine motor skills, gaining confidence, and having a wonderful time.

Let your preschool child decide.

Create a “process-focused” art experience by leaving all the choices entirely up to your child. Eliminate samples, step-by-step instructions, and the concepts of right and wrong. Instead, focus on exploration of techniques and materials to create something entirely unique and original.

Don’t just copy it!

Minimize “product-focused” art experiences where children copy patterns and examples. Although this method teaches children to follow instructions, it can leave them frustrated and disappointed in their work if they feel their product doesn’t “live up to” the sample.

Play with art.

Approach art like play. Make the experience joyful and unique, and encourage your child to express his or her individuality. If your child isn’t particularly enjoying painting, move onto sculpting with Play-Doh! There are endless ways to have fun with art.

Do arts and crafts with your preschooler.

Think 3D when creating art with your child! Use buttons, seeds, string, tissue paper, and other items around the house, and watch your child’s vocabulary grow while discussing the process. Using three-dimensional objects will inspire your child and bring their piece of art to life.

Remember, it’s important to not only allow, but also encourage your child to think outside of the box and create whatever inspires them. When they’re proud of their masterpiece, hang it on the fridge or place it on a shelf. This will motivate them to continue pursuing this new hobby. You never know—you may have the next Picasso on your hands!
