After a long winter and a rainy spring, warm summer days are a welcome sight to parents, caregivers, and teachers of preschoolers! Going outdoors is finally an option, and they can run off some pent-up energy playing outside on playgrounds and running and riding bicycles. However, longer and sunnier days also mean more time to fill with activities for small children with short attention spans.
The results of a web search for “summer crafts” will inevitably yield an overwhelming amount of results that can be tough to wade through! We’ve assembled a list of some Dollar Store finds to stock up on that are used in almost all summer-themed crafts:
- Glue
- Popsicle sticks
- Construction paper
- Markers and crayons
- Coloring and sticker books
- Sponges
- Yarn
- Pom-poms
- Pipe cleaners
- Pool noodles
- Plastic baskets
- Chalk
- Bubbles
- Paints or watercolors
- Ice cube or popsicle trays
There are countless summer- and holiday-themed crafts online, and almost all of them will require at least 2-3 of these items, so you’ll be glad you’ve stocked up.
Chalk and bubbles are an instant boredom-buster and a great way to get out of the house. Use chalk to draw giant tic-tac-toe squares or a bulls-eye on the driveway, and then use wet, colored sponges to toss onto these instant game boards.
Pool noodles can be used for everything from car race-tracks (cut them down the middle to make the u-shaped tracks) to rainbow-shaped obstacle courses to crawl or kick balls through.
Create some Boredom Bags to have on hand for those rare summer storms that keep everyone indoors. Have a coloring book, crayons, stickers, and coloring pads in a bag to hand out when the skies darken! Have fun!
