Teaching Your Preschooler about Thanksgiving

teaching your preschooler about thanksgiving

If you ask the average preschooler what Thanksgiving is about, you might receive a mix of answers relating to turkey, pumpkins, Pilgrims and Native Americans, football, or Black Friday shopping! This holiday has morphed into so many different things for many families. So, we are going to help you set this holiday straight for your little turkey! Teaching your preschooler about Thanksgiving is a piece of…pie!

Thanksgiving Beginnings

The Pilgrims were a group of people who left their home countries to sail to America for a variety of reasons. Some were looking for a better life. Others were seeking freedoms they did not have in their home lands. The Pilgrims made the hard journey across the Atlantic Ocean to America in the fall of 1620. Many became sick, and some even died on this difficult trip.

When the Pilgrims reached America, it was almost winter. It was very cold, and the Pilgrims had no homes in this new land. There were no stores to go buy food and supplies. They worked very hard to build homes and find food.

In the spring, the Pilgrims met a great new friend. His name was Squanto. He was a Native American. To their surprise, Squanto spoke English! Squanto helped the Pilgrims become peaceful neighbors and friends to surrounding tribes. Squanto also taught the Pilgrims how to grow their own food. Some of the Native Americans taught the Pilgrim men how to hunt and fish.

The Pilgrims could now take care of themselves in this new land. They had plenty of crops to harvest. They decided to have a special Thanksgiving Feast with their new friends, the Native Americans.

Many years later, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the fourth Thursday in November to be a day of thanksgiving for our country. We have had Thanksgiving Day every year since!

Thanksgiving Today

There are many ways to celebrate Thanksgiving Day now. Some families enjoy cooking a giant feast together and eating it later that day. Others like to get together and play a game of football in the yard. Some families get up and go serve food at a local community kitchen for those in need. And, there are some families who spend the night shopping on Black Friday! There are all kinds of great traditions to enjoy on Thanksgiving, which is what makes it one of the most loved holidays of the year! However your family chooses to celebrate, take a minute and remember to be thankful!
