Family Holiday Traditions

One of the best things about the holidays is creating or continuing traditions that only happen at this time of year. Not only does it cause you to stop and be intentional about what you’re doing in a season where the calendar is constantly full, but it creates memories that you and your preschooler will have for the rest of their lives. So how do you start or continue a tradition? We’ve come up with some tips to help you!

Start Small

There can be a lot of pressure on parents to create lasting holiday memories and traditions, but set yourself up for success by thinking of something small and letting the tradition grow from there. For example, make salt-dough ornaments for yourselves one year, or bake sugar cookies from the take-and-bake aisle at the grocery store. As your kids get older, the tradition may manifest into looking for brand new crafts or more adventurous recipes!

A Family Affair

Encourage your preschooler to ask their older relatives such as grandparents, aunts, and uncles about what family traditions they used to have as children. It may be something you didn’t even remember but that will be easy for you to incorporate into your extended family traditions!

Make it a Priority

If during any given moment that you’re spending with your family and your preschooler you stop and think, “This is wonderful. This is what the holidays should be all about,” take that moment and make a note in your phone or a calendar appointment for the next year. Be intentional about making that your family tradition and let the feeling of joy and magic help you anticipate it for years to come. Prioritize this special event or activity each year, and your kids will continue the tradition even once they graduate!
