Practicing Thankfulness With Your Preschooler

The season has turned, and we find ourselves pulled inside with our families. As we look to November and Thanksgiving, it’s a bit of a natural inclination to remember all the things for which you are grateful! Spend the extra time together with your preschoolers teaching them gratitude and practicing thankfulness. Here are a few ways to instill thankfulness in your preschoolers:

Don’t just say, “thank you;” be specific!

When you share your thankfulness with someone, be sure to tell them what you are thankful for! “Thank you for opening the door. “Thank you for passing the salt.” Or, “thank you for your kind words to your sister!” Your children will hear your formula for communicating gratitude and will model their thankfulness after your own!

Share as a family.

At dinner or bedtime, make it a regular habit to share what you are grateful for. Encourage your kids to talk about the actions of other people that they appreciated and when someone was kind to them. Then show them how they can reciprocate with kindness!

Write thank you notes.

As your preschooler learns to write, help them to write thank you notes for gifts and kindnesses. Write the note for your child and allow him to sign his name. You could even get your preschooler their own set of colorful stationery to write their thank you notes!

Make a Thankfulness Tree.

Add to your fall décor by creating a space to share the things you are grateful for. Your preschooler can help by cutting out leaves. Then add strings ahead of time so that as you think of all the things you are thankful for as a family, you can write them on a leaf and place them on your tree. At the end of the month, review your leaves as a family and reflect on the things you are grateful for!

It’s important for your child to practice gratitude all year long, so continue these habits as a family throughout the year.
