No running by the pool, no diving in shallow water, no swimming immediately after eating a big meal – we’ve heard it all before. However, these water safety tips should not be brushed off, especially now that summer is in full swing! Whether you’re out on the lake, building sandcastles on the beach, or taking a dip in your backyard pool, these safety tips are imperative for protecting your preschooler and ensuring a successful swim! Remove distractions
Be sure to remove all toys and inflatable floats from the edge of the water when not in use. These extra distractions can guide your preschooler toward the water’s edge when it’s not time to swim. Additionally, remind your child that it is unsafe to ride bikes, skateboards, or tricycles near the edge of the water. Let’s face it, water and wheels are never a good match!
Review boat safety
Boat safety is extremely important. Some basic rules to follow? Make sure your child stays seated on the boat at all times, wears a durable life jacket, and reapplies sunscreen throughout the day! These easy-to-follow safety tips will keep your kiddo protected whenever you’re out on the water.
Take swimming lessons
Swimming lessons are a great way to teach your preschool child about being safe in the water, but know that they aren’t guaranteed to save the day every time. Spend a few hours each week teaching your child how to swim, reminding them of basic safety rules each time you hop in the water.
Remember – the best way to ensure your child’s safety when swimming is by keeping your eyes on the water at all times. Spending time in the pool or by the lake is the ultimate way to stay cool from June to August – so be safe, hop in, and have fun!
