Teaching Preschoolers Foreign Languages

Teaching Preschoolers Foreign Languages at Kids 'R' Kids Highland Glen/Pearland, preschool, daycare, childcare

Young children have the incredible capability of absorbing information that they are exposed to, like learning new languages. Being able to speak more than one language is a wonderful skill and carries lifelong benefits. The earlier your preschooler is introduced to a new language, the more easily they are able to learn it. Here is how you can teach your preschooler a foreign language.

Begin at the beginning.

Start simple by introducing colors, numbers, and simple phrases to your child in another language. “Hello,” “goodbye,” and “thank you” will be easy for your child to remember and incorporate into their day-to-day conversations.

Play I Spy with your preschooler!

Here’s a fun way to learn a new language with your preschooler—play I Spy! Whether you’re on a walk or sitting in your living room, you can look around and name different items in English and in the second language you are teaching your preschooler. This is a great way for your child to expand their vocabulary all while taking in their surroundings.

Use a picture book.

Try flipping through a picture book together and point to common objects such as tables, chairs, windows and doors. First, say the words in English and then repeat their names in the second language you are teaching your child. They will quickly understand that these words mean the same thing and represent a certain object, and will be able to recall this information when they see said object in person.

Find an interactive activity for your preschooler.

Looking for an interactive way to teach your child a new language? There’s an app for that. Gus on the Go, Little Pim, and Dic-Dic are three wonderful apps that can be used to teach your child simple phrases and new words in a variety of languages, from Spanish to French.

Whether your child eventually speaks a second language fluently or simply enjoys learning something new, teaching your preschooler a foreign language is an experience that will benefit you both for years to come.
