Fall is the season for warm sweaters, golden leaves—and grateful hearts! With a family gratitude tree, you can turn your preschooler’s thankfulness into a fun and meaningful work of art.

Build Your Tree Together

Creating a gratitude tree is a great way to include your preschooler in a seasonal craft that also teaches valuable life skills. Start by helping them build a “tree” on a wall, door, or refrigerator using paper, string, or even branches from the yard.

Cut out leaves in fall colors and let your preschooler decorate them using crayons, markers, or stickers. Then, each day, talk about one thing your child is thankful for. It could be something simple like “my teddy bear” or “going to the park.” Write it on the leaf and hang it up for everyone to see.

This process gives preschoolers a sense of routine and belonging. As the days go by, they’ll love seeing their tree grow and remembering each special moment.

Boost Learning Through Crafting

While your child glues, colors, and cuts, they’re also building fine motor skills. Talking about what they’re thankful for supports language development, memory, and emotional expression. It’s an activity that checks so many developmental boxes—and it’s fun too!

Don’t worry about perfection. Let your preschooler lead the way with messy, silly, or colorful ideas. The goal is to help them connect feelings with actions and practice saying “thank you” with their hearts.

Celebrate Gratitude as a Family

Hang your tree in a central place and revisit it often. This visual reminder encourages preschoolers to think about gratitude daily—and they’ll feel proud knowing their ideas helped create something beautiful.
