Back to School Schedule Planning for Families with Preschoolers

Back to School Schedule Planning for Families with Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Greenwood, preschool, daycare, childcare

Back to school season usually means a busier schedule for most families. This can be tricky for families with preschoolers. Below are a few tips on how to make schedule planning a bit easier.

Plan Ahead

Ensuring your family eats a healthy dinner may become more difficult during back to school time. One way to avoid the scramble to prepare a healthy meal is to plan ahead. Try to plan meals a week ahead of time and do grocery shopping one day for the entire week. Planning ahead and doing all your shopping in one day will cut down on extra trips to the store and save you time. Try to plan to complete all your errands on the same day and plan your route before leaving the house to use your time most efficiently.

Daily Schedule

A daily schedule will help both you and your preschooler move through the day more smoothly. Plan for extra time in the mornings, since little ones tend to stay in bed until the last minute and may be slow moving in the morning. Schedule time in the day for your preschooler to have plenty of play time. Preschoolers learn through play, so play time is vital! Finally, plan your preschooler’s bedtime early enough that they get plenty of sleep and are well-rested for school!

Child Friendly Schedule

Create a schedule for your preschooler to utilize. This will help your preschooler know what to expect and may help build responsibility. A visual schedule with pictures works well for preschoolers, since they are not reading yet.

Be Flexible

After planning your family’s daily schedule, try it out for a week. You may find you need to tweak a few things to make the schedule work better.  Be kind to yourself and remember that life with a preschooler cannot be planned perfectly. Embrace every moment (even the chaos) and enjoy your preschooler!

Shared Calendar

Create a shared calendar for the entire family to keep track of events. Place a calendar in a convenient place in your home. Some busy families color-code the calendar with each family member using a specific color (i.e. green for Sarah, orange for Jacob, etc.) or a different color for different activities (i.e. pink for school events, blue for sport events, etc.).
