How to Teach Preschool Children about Art

How to Teach Preschool Children about Art at Kids 'r' Kids Greatwood, preschool, daycare, childcare

There are countless benefits when it comes to exploring and embracing art, from developing a new skill to discovering a unique creative outlet. If you’re interested in introducing your preschooler to the wonderful world of art, we’ve got you covered. Check out these tips, encourage your little one to love and appreciate art, and watch him or her translate the lessons to their everyday life.

Find different kinds of art.

Expose your child to different types of art, including drawing, painting, sculpting, design, and architecture. This may help you uncover exactly which areas of art interest your child, which you can then further explore down the road.

Try new materials your preschooler finds.

Offer new and interesting materials for your preschooler to get creative with. Finger paint, create spin art, and use unconventional items as brushes, such as potato mashers, plastic spoons and toothbrushes. You don’t even have to use printer paper as your blank canvas—painted wooden shapes and letters make for great room decor.

Read illustrative books aloud.

When reading aloud, choose children’s books with artful illustrations such as those by Eric Carle, Tomie dePaola, and Dr. Seuss, and incorporate a discussion of the art. You can talk about things such as the colors and shapes used in the illustrations, and even which part of the picture was your favorite to look at.

Think 3D!

Think 3D when creating art with your child! Use buttons, seeds, string, tissue paper, and other items around the house, and watch your child’s vocabulary grow while discussing the process.

At the end of the day, it’s important for your little one to have fun. Approach art like play, remembering to keep the experience light-hearted, encouraging, and inspiring. Who knows—your child could be one paintbrush stroke away from creating their first masterpiece.
