Family Time with your Preschooler

Family Time with your Preschooler

We’ve all been there—after a long day of work, errands, extracurricular activities, and picking your little one up from preschool, when the whole family has some relaxing time at the end of the day, everyone wants to go off and do their own thing. However, quality family time is important, but it is especially important for preschoolers. Here are some ways to make sure you always get some good family time in with your preschooler despite hectic daily lives.

Learn to Say No

One of the major reasons you have a full family schedule is that you are saying YES to everything—from agreeing to host the next PTO event to taking on another after-school sport or even just to agreeing to eat at different times as the rest of your family to get more work done. Learning to say NO to things so you can instead focus on family time is one of the hardest, but also one of the most rewarding, things you can integrate into your daily life.

Prioritize

Sometimes, your list of things to do can feel so overwhelming that you try to do everything at once, which can rob you of the free time that you should instead be taking advantage of. Instead, sit down at the beginning of your week and start planning for days or even weeks ahead on when to do things. When you do this, you can also schedule in your free time and prioritize it just as much as you would anything else.

Get Flexible

We all know that plans change— and that’s ok! If you suddenly need to switch your designated Family Night (always try to have at least one Family Night a week) for Tuesday instead of Friday, go with the flow! As long as you and your preschooler are getting that quality family time in, that’s all that matters. And if you do have to sacrifice family time every once in a while because life happens, don’t beat yourself up about it. Make it up to your family by making the next Family Time special by spending an extra hour together or treating everyone to ice cream.

Family time is something we all want more of, and the key is finding what works for you and your family. As long as you’re making the effort to spend quality time together, your family will appreciate and thank you for it.
