Teaching your Preschooler about Independence Day

Independence Day

Do you remember celebrating the 4th of July as a child? Long days at the pool, sparklers, watching fireworks? This day is memorable for most of us, and it’s delightful to re-experience Independence Day through our children’s eyes. Before you head to the pool, light up the grill, or buy fireworks, take some time leading up to the 4th to teach your preschooler why we celebrate Independence Day. We’ve compiled some easy ways to teach your preschool-age children more about this patriotic holiday.

History Lesson

Young children have a short attention span, so you may want to hold off reading the Declaration of Independence aloud. However, you can absolutely tell the story of how America was formed in language that they can understand. There are some children’s books for all ages that feature some of the key players in America’s independence. Visit your local library together and ask your librarian to help you find these books. They may already be on display!

What is a Government?

Once again, keep this simple and age- and attention span-appropriate! Sit down with your child and name the three branches of our government and how that is very different from a monarchy and one ruler. Talk about how we have a President, but how the other branches make sure nobody gets too powerful!

Keep it Fun

Look online for examples of American Flag crafts that are fun to do but easy to teach about the parts of the flag and what they represent. Learn and sing some patriotic songs together as you do the craft (“You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “This Land is My Land” are great examples!) There are even recipes for flag cakes and cookies that are educational and delicious! Take them with you to the family barbecue!
