Self Care for Works of Heart: Taking Care of Yourself as a Parent

It can be difficult to give yourself the care you need as a parent. You’re in charge of keeping little hearts happy and healthy, and that can take up a lot of time and energy. What are some ways to win that energy back? After all, you care for others best if you yourself are in good shape, and simply deserve the best care you can offer yourself. Here are a few ways to get started.

You” dates: Dates with a significant other are important, and so is taking time to nurture your likes and identity. If you like music, for example, treat yourself to time listening to your favorite songs—if finding time is difficult, weave your own time into existing “to-do” items: for example, playing music you love while cooking.

Sleeping when you can: This can often be easier said than done. However, when sleep is rare, it’s all the more important to take opportunities to sleep when they come. This may mean sleeping when your baby sleeps, and taking turns at caring for your child.

Getting enough to eat: You may notice that when your child has not eaten for even a little while, they become irritable and tired. This doesn’t just happen in children: staying well-nourished and having a good diet can impact your mood and energy levels at any age.

Saying ‘no’: Not every activity or “to-do” item is a must. Having the presence of mind and pre-made decision to say “no” to the unnecessary can be a great time and energy saver.

5-minute meditation: Meditation is proven to be one of the most immediately impactful things you can do for your stress and energy levels. Just meditating for a mere 10 minutes a day can have a noticeable positive impact on your mental state. There are many 5-minute guided meditations on YouTube you can use to help with this.

Taking good care of yourself is difficult when your children are young, but is still important. When you have time, take care of yourself. When you don’t have time, be intentional and gentle with yourself nonetheless.
