Preschoolers and Vocabulary

Preschoolers and Vocabulary at Kids 'R' Kids, daycare, childcare, preschool, learning academy

In today’s world of social media, text messaging, and short attention spans, it seems like instead of losing the propensity for advanced vocabulary, American culture has purposely gotten rid of it.  Everything is abbreviated, whether it’s conversation, advertising, or even books themselves. It seems that people have simply lost their attention span, and not that many people seem to be fighting for it. As your preschooler is entering the world of education, starting to learn letters and understand the world around them, fighting for their knowledge and vocabulary can play a huge part in their development. Here are some helpful tips on how to encourage your preschooler to love reading and help them to build their vocabulary.

Include Your Preschooler in Conversation

Too often you will see parents talking above their kids by using big words or spelling words out, and sometimes that is necessary, like when planning a trip to the amusement park. But, at the same time, it off-handedly suppresses the kids’ creativity and often results in them getting told to be less nosy. What is unfortunate is that it misses an opportunity to include your kids and to start teaching them complex words and ideas. If they don’t understand a word, take the time to explain it to them. Take every opportunity to teach them something new and it will go a long way towards their confidence and development.

Don’t Oversimplify

On the other hand, parents just as often will speak down to their preschooler, and talk to them as if they are incapable of handling a conversation. Babying your child and talking to them as if they are still 2 years old will only result in one thing – a baby. Don’t be afraid to challenge them a little bit! Ask what they think, what they would rather do, why they think chores are unfair, any of the above. By simply taking the opportunity to have a conversation with them, their vocabulary will expand and grow with each interaction.

Foster their Creativity

The straightest and easiest path to boosting the development of your preschooler’s vocabulary lies with putting a book in front of them. If you can teach them to love reading, in any form, then you have made a great first step. Whether it’s reading to them before bed or slipping a couple of children’s books in their backpacks, you really can’t go wrong! Even if you struggle to get your kid to love reading or storytime, the principle is that you can encourage them to be curious. If they love the outdoors, encourage that and teach them new words for caterpillars and birds. By taking the initiative and putting new opportunities for learning in front of your preschooler, you are taking a great first step in strengthening their vocabulary.
