How to Start a Garden with Your Preschooler

How to Start a Garden with Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Fort Mill, preschool, daycare, childcare, learning academy

If you’re feeling a little ambitious and in touch with nature, this spring might be the perfect time to start a garden with your preschool child! You don’t have to break out the tiller and dedicate half your backyard to homesteading unless you just really want to. You can garden in a box or on a windowsill and minimize the mess to maximize the fun for your child!

Build the box.

Depending on the work you want to put into it, you can garden in a windowsill, or even in a cup. The bigger the garden, the bigger the produce! If you want a garden in a box, you can build a square box out of four pieces of 2″ by 4″ wooden boards. The boards can build a simple square. Your preschooler can then line the bottom of the box with a garden bed liner that can be found at any gardening store.

Fill the box.

Then, have your child fill the box with the dirt of your choice, and fill the box with your plants. You can either raise seedlings in the house to transfer out into the garden, or you can buy plants that are already grown and then just transfer them into your raised garden bed.

Raise seedlings.

If you want something that is a little bit more containable, you can raise seedlings with your little ones. This process is very simple since it requires very minimal work. It depends on the seed, but most of the time, all you need to do to raise a seedling is to put the seed into a dish of water, and wait for it to sprout!

This way of gardening is most fun for the little ones because they can just sit back and watch the progress of the sprouting seedling. Make it fun and develop in your preschool student a love for nature—and then let them take it to their learning academy or school!
