Roaring Fun: Safari Adventures from Home with Your Preschooler

Home Learning Curriculum

Grab your binoculars (the ones you and your preschooler made from toilet paper rolls, of course) and get ready for a safari adventure!

Go on a Hunt

To start your safari, print out pictures of African animals. For added stability, glue them to cardstock or construction paper. In your yard, hide pictures of the animals. You can think about where the animals might be found as you place them and then discuss them with your preschooler as they are searching. Giraffes eat leaves high in the tree, so they will probably be found near trees. Some animals look for shade, others cool down in the water or roll in the mud, and lions may be found in a high place or on the top of some rocks. Have your preschooler grab their binoculars and then search for the animals!

Cool Down and Read

Once you are ready to come in and cool off, grab the book Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae and Guy Parker-Rees and enjoy reading it to your preschooler. This book is a cute story with a great message about Gerald the giraffe, who is teased for his terrible dancing skills!

Snack Time

After going on a safari and reading a book (that may end with some dancing), you and your preschooler will most likely be hungry for a snack!

Complete Some Crafts

No preschool adventure is complete without some crafting! Handprint animals are a fun and easy way to make your own safari artwork. For most animals, you can paint the child’s hand the main color of the animal (yellow for giraffes, gray for elephants, etc.). Typically, the handprint will be turned upside down, and the thumb becomes the head. The details like eyes, hair, horns, or tails can be added with other colors after the paint dries. Many examples of handprint art are available with a Pinterest or Google search.

Have fun on your safari adventure!
