As the parent of a preschooler during the holiday season, you may be in a rut trying to help your child find a gift for family and friends that doesn’t break the bank. Thankfully, there are a lot of options for low-cost, personalized gifts that your loved ones will adore. Here are three options to consider:
Construction Paper Holiday Cards
Perhaps the lowest-maintenance option would be to sit your preschooler down with a stack of multi-colored construction paper or cardstock and let the imagination do the talking. Encourage them to create a fold-over card or a single postcard with vivid drawings or use other bits of construction paper to glue together a holiday collage. Your child can even attach crafty pom poms and other materials to make a 3D card that is uniquely theirs! Holiday cards make fitting gifts for family, family friends, or even preschool classmates.
Salt Dough Ornaments
Salt dough ornaments and paperweights are the classic gift that gives a personal touch to your family’s holiday season. Create the dough by mixing 1 cup of salt with 1 cup of plain flour. Gradually add 1 cup of water, including any food coloring to change the hue of the dough. Stop adding water when the mixture has become dough-like and not too sticky. Knead the dough on a floured surface, then use a roller to flatten it out. Have your child choose a cookie cutter shape for the ornament (such as a star, Christmas tree or heart) and cut your dough into the ornament. Use a straw to punch a hole through the top center of the ornament (where the ribbon will go later).
Add a personalized touch by having your child put their hand, finger or footprint in the dough. Once you have the ornament(s) prepared, lay them on a greaseproof baking tray and cook on very low heat (+/- 200 degrees F) for up to 3 hours. The aim isn’t to cook the ornaments, but to dry them out thoroughly. Once they have been removed from the oven and cooled, encourage your preschooler to customize the ornaments further with paint or glue-on materials such as plastic jewels or glitter.
Pom Pom Photo Ornaments
This on-the-fly gift can be made inexpensively, using only a small sheet of cardboard, a craft knife or scissors, a photo of your child, craft pom poms, white glue/glue gun and ribbon or twine. Have your child draw a 5 inch by 5 inch wreath on the cardboard. Help them cut out the design using scissors or a craft knife. Then simply glue the pom poms to the front of the wreath to create a textured façade and glue the picture to the back of the interior, so that the wreath frames the photo. Using a hole punch, create a hole in the top of the wreath and thread some ribbon through to put the finishing touches on this loving yet inexpensive gift.
