December isn’t just about the holidays we know best—it’s a season full of beautiful customs, colors, and stories from all around the globe. Preschoolers may be small, but their ability to learn about the world is big! With just a few intentional activities, families can guide children through a cultural journey filled with music, crafts, and kindness.
Celebrate with a Mini “World Tour”
- St. Lucia Day (Sweden): Dress in white, craft a simple crown of “candles,” and talk about how this holiday celebrates light. Preschoolers can pretend to lead a parade and “bring light” to different rooms in the house or classroom. You might also read a story about St. Lucia and enjoy a snack of cinnamon buns or other cozy treats. Talk about how light helps people feel warm and safe during the darker months.
- Las Posadas (Mexico): Reenact the neighborhood procession using dolls or action figures, and enjoy singing traditional songs together. Children can make paper lanterns or stars to carry during the “journey.” Discuss the importance of hospitality and what it means to welcome others. End the activity by sharing a small treat to celebrate the spirit of community.
- Dongzhi Festival (China): Explain how some cultures celebrate the winter solstice with warm food and family time—perfect for cuddles and storytime! Children can roll pretend “tangyuan” (sticky rice balls) using playdough and “serve” them to their families. Talk about how the shortest day of the year is a symbol of light returning. You could also trace the sun’s path on a simple craft or use a flashlight to explore shadows.
How to Create a Preschool Passport Experience
Design a map on poster board with little travel “stops.” Add a sticker or stamp each time your preschooler explores a new tradition. Let your preschooler help choose activities—maybe a song from Korea, a food from India, or a story from Italy. Keep it age-appropriate, but don’t underestimate how meaningful it is to talk about love and celebration in many forms.
