Preschoolers might be little, but they have big hearts—and helping them express their feelings can be as fun as it is meaningful. A gratitude tree is a perfect hands-on way to teach young children about thankfulness during the fall season.

Start with Simple Supplies

You don’t need anything fancy to make a gratitude tree! Start with paper, scissors, crayons, and tape. Help your child draw or cut out a bare tree trunk and branches. Then, cut leaves from colorful paper. Each day, ask your preschooler to name one thing they’re thankful for and add it to a leaf. Tape or glue the leaves onto the branches or wall.

Preschoolers might say things like “my stuffed bunny,” “singing at school,” or “pancakes with syrup!” It’s not about big ideas—it’s about helping kids notice the little things that bring joy. Even drawing a smiley face or rainbow can be a form of gratitude.

Make It a Family Affair

Include the whole family in the tradition. Grown-ups, siblings, and even visiting relatives can join in. Preschoolers learn by watching others, so when they see adults taking time to reflect, they’ll feel proud to do the same.

Turn it into a cozy evening ritual—perhaps right after dinner or before storytime. Make it special with warm apple cider, soft music, or seasonal candles to help set the mood.

A Tree That Teaches from the Heart

This activity isn’t just art—it’s a lesson in emotional growth. Children learn to pause, reflect, and communicate their feelings. That emotional awareness helps them build stronger connections with others and feel more confident in their own experiences.
