Every April just as the days start to warm up, rain seems more abundant, and buds start to pop up from the soil, we celebrate Earth Day. It’s celebrated every April 22nd and serves as a gentle reminder of all the beautiful gifts the earth provides us every day. But it also reminds us to give back in any way that we can. Our earth relies on us to treat it well, so this is a great opportunity to pass this on to your children.

Go for a hike or visit a national park

What better way to get in touch with Earth than to spend a day in nature. If you’re lucky enough to have a beautiful national park close by, that’s great; if not, even a local nature walk can be a fun and rewarding activity. Bonus point: bring a bag so if you see trash along the way, you can do your part by picking up litter. Make sure to explain to your children why it’s so important that we don’t litter.

Reduce, reuse, recycle

Teach your kids about the importance of recycling. Maybe you do regular, weekly recycling of common things, such as milk cartons and cardboards. But explain the process in a little bit of detail. It may be fun to collect cans and go to the return section at your local grocery store. Maybe you can even let your kids get a treat with the return money.

Feeling crafty? Build a DIY magnifying glass

Kids are curious and love hands on crafts. With this project, your kids can get a closer look at all of Earth’s fascinating creations, such as leaves, dirt, or even bugs for the adventurous kids

Build your own garden

Few things are more rewarding than a farm to table meal. Introduce this on a small scale by growing simple crops such as carrots, cucumbers, or peas this season. This is a great way to teach kids how important it is to take care of Earth as it provides such abundant gifts to us.

So, you made the garden, now what do you do with scraps? Why not start a composting bin. Not only will this provide you with the start for nutrient-dense soil for next season, but it will also teach your kids a green way to deal with waste. Giving old food new purpose is a great way for kids to understand that waste should be minimized.
