Beating the First Day Jitters Of Preschool

For some children, preschool is an exciting new adventure. For others, especially for children who have never left home for an extended period of time, it can be scary and overwhelming. Even if your new preschooler will only be away from home for just a few hours, the first day of school will be a huge step. We know you’ve prepared as much as possible, but will all of the excited anticipation of the next big step translate into a smooth, stress-free transition on the first day of preschool? As a parent, you can help them ace it, and all their weeks ahead, with these helpful get-ready-for-school strategies.

Nothing can get you as frazzled as rushing through your morning routine because you are running late. This is especially true for young children. Make sure to get everyone up at a reasonable hour so you and your new pupil won’t be racing through morning activities.

Tip 2: Try to Arrive Fashionably Early

If you show up a bit early to school, your little one can slowly settle in before all of the hubbub of the day starts. This allows extra time for your child to talk with the teacher and get comfortable with their new surroundings which is tougher to do once all of the other children arrive.

Tip 3: Put on Your Happy Face

Nerves are highly contagious, so make sure to remain confident and excited, even if the anxiety is eating you up inside. If your overall demeanor is upbeat and happy, there’s a better chance your child’s will be, too.

Tip 4: Make Sure to Communicate Expectations with Your Child

When it is time to go, make sure to say goodbye to your child and not just sneak out when they are distracted. When we sneak out, we play in to our child’s fears about abandonment. Let them know what time you will be back and discuss what they can expect throughout their day. Having an understanding of when you will be back for them can go a long way in helping them cope with a good bye.

Ask your child to tell you all about their day; what they did, who they met, what they liked most, and what they are looking forward to tomorrow. Getting them excited about the fun stuff they get to do at school will make the morning good byes so much easier on everyone.
