Exploring New Foods with Your Preschooler During National Fruit and Veggies Month

Exploring New Foods with Your Preschooler During National Fruit and Veggies Month at Kids 'R' Kids Waterside, preschool, daycare, childcare

Attempting to get your preschooler to eat necessary fruits and veggies can be a chore for anyone! What if there was a way to make the process more exciting? Here are a few ways to help your preschooler explore new foods during National Fruit and Veggies Month.

Help get your preschooler involved in the process.

Allow your preschooler to help you cut up new types of fruit. Then, you and your child can add the new flavors into smoothies or yogurt. Another idea is to make fun shapes (or emoji faces) out of the fruit and let your preschooler try out the new foods. This is sure to put a smile on your child’s face! Your child can also help cut up cucumbers or lemons to add to a glass of ice water.

Bring your preschooler along on a “new-foods-only” shopping run.

Hype up this grocery shopping event as a fun opportunity to buy and try out new fruits and vegetables. In the produce section, allow your child to pick out a new fruit and/or vegetable for everyone to try out at home. You can encourage your child that they will be able to help with cutting up the produce, as well.

Play a silly game with your preschooler.

Whether or not your child has helped you at the grocery store or helped cut up the produce, you can still play a fun “To Dip or Not to Dip” game with your preschooler, using new fruits or vegetables. Near the new foods, allow your child to have some sort of condiment (ranch, ketchup, etc.). Before you take a bite of the new food, let your child guess each time if you will dip it or not. When your preschooler is ready, you can give your child a turn while you take a turn guessing.

Who knows—if your preschooler has fun trying new foods, perhaps a new healthy fruit or veggie will find its way onto your child’s list of favorites!
