Introducing Your Preschooler to the Concept of Giving Back

The holidays are the perfect time for family fun, leisure, and recreation. It’s also a wonderful time to introduce your preschooler to the concept of giving back to others.

You can begin by simply talking to your kids about why it’s important to help others and give back, and then show them how to do it. Maybe use an example from a favorite movie or TV show. Then, take action! Lead by example and include them in acts of kindness. See below for some kid-friendly ways to help others this holiday season.

  1. Look for local volunteering opportunities that are appropriate for kids, like cleaning up your neighborhood.
  2. At home, have your kids help you cook dinner (or let them pretend to help), and then take some plates of food over to a neighbor or family in need.
  3. Find simple and creative ways to raise money for a food bank or animal shelter, like a lemonade stand or selling handmade crafts.
  4. Show your kids that giving back doesn’t have to be a big production. Sometimes the simplest acts of kindness can make the biggest difference.
  5. Provide and explain various causes and organizations and have them choose which one they care for the most.

No matter how you choose to give, remind your kids that it doesn’t always have to be about doing something for someone else. Sometimes it’s just about being a good friend or family member!
