Fresh out of Kindergarten, our first graders come in eager to embark on a new chapter of learning, friendship, and creativity. At Kids ‘R’ Kids Waterford Lakes, our teachers prioritize a thoughtful balance of learning, working, and playing. This balance creates a nurturing environment where six- and seven-year-olds can grow socially, emotionally, and academically. As children age out of the more play-focused Kindergarten environment, they are ready to take on the challenges of a more structured first-grade experience — and we’re here to guide them every step of the way.
What to Expect in First Grade
First grade brings a year of exciting “firsts.” From expanding vocabulary and solving math problems to making new friends and practicing independence, students grow by leaps and bounds. It can be a big transition, but our experienced and compassionate teachers ensure each child receives individual attention and support. We believe in meeting each child where they are and helping them build confidence while mastering foundational skills.
Here are some of the academic goals and focus areas for our first-grade students:
Reading & Writing
- Recognizing letters and their corresponding sounds
- Writing their own name confidently and legibly
- Holding and using a pencil with proper grip
- Beginning to read independently with phonics support
- Comprehending stories, including fairy tales and popular children’s books
- Retelling stories using their own words
- Recognizing rhymes, patterns, and sight words
- Sorting and categorizing words
- Identifying key story elements such as who, what, where, when, why, and how
Science & Math
- Mastering basic addition and subtraction
- Counting to 100 and understanding number patterns
- Measuring objects using standard and non-standard tools
- Learning the concept of base ten and place value
- Recognizing and naming basic shapes
- Telling time to the hour and half-hour
- Understanding the value of coins and reading a calendar
- Exploring life sciences, including plants, animals, and habitats
- Learning about Earth, the Sun, and basic natural phenomena
These skills provide a strong foundation for future academic success. Our goal is not only for students to master these concepts but also to develop a lifelong love of learning.
