How to Help Your Little One Adjust to Day Care

They’ll cry. They’ll throw tantrums. They’ll play sick (if they’re old enough to understand the nifty tricks of the trade).

Worse; they might even force you to take them out of the day care should they decide to get really stubborn.

No one said the transition would come easy.

But you can help your little one adjust better to their upcoming daycare routine by following these tips:

Start at home

If possible, implement the day care’s plan at your home at least a week before your child starts their group care program. For example, if the class would eat the lunch at 12 pm and nap at 1 pm, try adjusting your home schedule to match.

The idea?

This will help the rhythms of the preschool days feel more natural to your child once they start attending it.

Integrate slowly

Reach out to the day care’s staff and arrange some visits in advance. This way, your child can get to know their new surroundings and acclimatize to it.

Note: If you see your child adapting very quickly to the day care, avoid going with the full period of integration since it’s not needed.

Teach them self-reliance skills

That is, if they’re old enough to learn.

Take our word; they’re going to need them—skills.

Plus, it will help them make feel less anxious when you are not around to get their work done for them.

And which parent does not want their kids to become independent?

Ask questions about their day

On your way back to home, ask them questions about how their day went; what activities they performed, what they ate, how many new friends they made, what the highlight of their day was etc.

Encourage, motivate and praise them. A little positive reinforcement can go a long way.

Your child is used to being at the center of your world at home. It’s pretty natural for them to find this sudden change unusual and uncomforting. As such, you must help them cope and adjust.
