Every Good Day Care Discipline Policy Has These Elements…

Kids will be kids, whether they’re at home – or at day care. Naturally, child care providers must deal with their disruptive behaviors, tantrums, hitting and general mischief—in a “constructive” way.

You see, the way children are disciplined has a big impact on their personalities; whom they grow up to be and what type of parents they become in the future. If you try being too harsh with them, it can make them act violently.

It’s, therefore, crucial for daycare centers to have a plan in place to resolve any child disciplinary issues that might come up appropriately.

As a parent, your responsibility should be to study the discipline policy of a day care before getting your kid enrolled there, and to choose a center that has a good discipline policy.

How to identify a day care with good discipline policy?

Look for these elements:

Prevention

Does the center monitor the kids to spot initial signs of inappropriate behavior? When dealing with little ones, preventing bad behavior is always easier than trying to deal with it after it happens. This strategy also helps the child in understanding that what they’re doing is wrong and should be avoided.

Defined consequences

Every act of indiscipline should have consequences clearly defined in the policy. This helps establish expectations, and you’d know how your child will be punished if they break certain rules.

Redirection

Let’s be honest, no child finds it pleasing when they’re punished. They might feel frustrated and could retaliate in frustration if you don’t redirect their energy towards something positive. Review the policy to check what it offers in terms of redirection.

Positivity

There’s no point in negatively disciplining children, especially for something trivial. To be honest, they won’t listen to you either if you try this approach with them. Therefore, a day care should look to address complaints of bad behavior with positive guidance. The staff should make the child understand that what they did was wrong, and they shouldn’t do it again. Advocating positivity in response to misbehavior almost always produces a more positive outcome.
