Adaptive Skills And Activities Every Parent Should Teach Their Toddler

Teaching your child how to adapt to their surroundings is a fundamental component of early education. While it’s natural—and normal—to be overprotective of your little one, remember that self-care and adaptive tasks are beneficial to their growth.

Before you enroll your child into kindergarten, it’s imperative to teach them these basic skills:

Getting Dressed By Themselves

Teaching your child how to dress by themselves will help them become more independent.

Kids can be cranky early in the morning after they wake up, and getting them dressed can become difficult. Turn this into a fun activity by creating a game. You can roleplay and pretend to be their favorite character or superhero.

You can also dress them up as their favorite superhero. Tell them you’re going on an adventure and if they put on their clothes and shoes, you’ll take them with you.

You can also create a “treasure hunt” and give them easy tasks like brushing their teeth and putting on their shoes to find the clues. Reward them with a piece of candy or their favorite food when they’ve accomplished all the tasks.

Personal Hygiene

Personal hygiene is extremely important. At this age, your child is curious and energetic, running around everywhere and getting dirty while playing.

Teach your child about personal hygiene by playing with them using their favorite toys. Use their favorite action figure or doll as an example. Brush the toy’s hair and pretend to wash their face and brush their teeth. This will teach your child the importance of personal hygiene.

And you can also tell them, “Look, (the doll/figure) is all clean. How about we wash our face and brush our teeth too?”

You can also buy them a toothbrush or face wash/shampoo with their favorite character. This will motivate and excite them to use these products more.

Making Lunch

You don’t have to let them near the stove (that’s an absolute no-no!), but one of the ways you can get them to participate in making lunch is by being creative with the food.

Bento boxes are a great way to start and will hone your child’s creativity. You can cut carrots and other veggies (fruits as well) into different shapes. You can get your child to assemble their own lunch box the way they want. This will be an interactive activity and will help bring out your child’s inner artist.

And last but not least, enroll your child into a preschool program to prepare them for kindergarten.

If you’re looking for a daycare center in Orlando, we offer an exceptional preschool program that uses a hands-on approach to help your child grow. With a safe learning environment, we will ensure that your child gets the love and encouragement they deserve to thrive.
