How Social-Emotional Learning Helps Children With Anxiety

Kids under the age of 5 easily become distressed—especially when they’re separated from their parents.

The first week of preschool can turn into a nightmare for both teachers and parents. Some kids do well and adjust quickly, while others take time. All of this depends on your child’s needs and personality.

Having separation anxiety doesn’t mean your child is a troublemaker or too difficult to take care of. It simply means they’re easily stressed out. It means they’re sensitive and emotional.

Taking Care of an Emotional Child

The first thing you need to do is understand that your child has different needs than other kids their age. Every child is different and unique. If you ask us, we’ll tell you the same thing we tell other parents—it’s okay. What’s more, they can learn to cope better!

Placing your child in an environment that encourages social-emotional learning can be extremely beneficial. Here’s how:

¬ It Teaches Them about Other Emotions

An overly emotional child doesn’t understand his or her emotions. By being in a program that encourages them to learn about emotions, they’ll understand how they’re feeling.

They’ll be able to identify different emotions like sadness, anger, and frustration. They’ll learn about coping techniques and how to vent their anger productively.

Some kids are naturally jealous and it can make them agitated. They’ll learn to cope with irrational feelings in a more positive way. They’ll learn that it’s okay to feel these emotions but it’s not okay to lash out.

¬ It Boosts their Confidence

If your child becomes easily stressed out when he or she is in a crowded place, being in a friendly environment will help them. It will help them become accustomed to different types of kids their age. They’ll be exposed to different personalities. They’ll also find kids who share the same hobbies as them.

When they’ll make friends, they’ll become more confident. This will help them break out of their shell.

Some kids just need a little bit of love, encouragement, and time to adjust to their surroundings. Once your child gets accustomed to a new environment, they’ll learn to adapt and accept others around them. All they need is love and support from you to help them grow!
