Childproofing Tips for New Parents

Childproofing Tips for New Parents at Kids 'R' Kids Tomball, preschool, daycare, childcare

If your child is a newborn and immobile, the need to childproof your home may seem a distant idea. However, that little baby will grow and learn very quickly, and will be mobile before you know it! Childproofing is a big job and can be time consuming, so begin as soon as possible.

Small Steps

Begin childproofing by completing a walkthrough of your entire home. During the walkthrough, make notes of what you find which needs to be childproofed. Once you have a list to work from, begin childproofing one room at a time.

Secure Furniture

It is no secret small children enjoy climbing. Furniture which is not anchored to a wall can easily be tipped over and severely injure your child. Any large pieces of furniture, including televisions,  should be anchored to a wall.

Chemicals

Medications and chemicals should be stored in one easily secured location. Once you have these items in the cabinet to be stored, place a childproof lock on the cabinet door to ensure your little one cannot get to the chemicals and ingest them.

Cords

Try to use curtains or blinds without cords. If this is not possible, tie the cords up so your child cannot become tangled or worse in the cords. The cords are much shorter when closed and can become more of a hazard when the blinds are lifted. Also, take note of electrical cords which could be used to pull heavy electronics off of higher surfaces.

Outlets

Outlets are another danger for little ones. You will want to get covers to ensure little fingers or items held by little fingers cannot be pushed into the outlets. Self-closing socket plugs are a great option, as they are easily opened by an adult and do not become a choking hazard if your little one removes it.

Prevent Falls

It is recommended to place baby gates at the top and bottom of stairs to prevent your precious little peanut from falling down from the top or climbing from the bottom and then falling. Additionally, place safeguards on any windows in which a child could fall through the screen.

This list is not all-inclusive and each home is different. For more tips or information on childproofing, check out these tips from The New York Times or Parent Magazine.
