Gardening with Your Preschooler

Gardening with Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Tomball, preschool, daycare, childcare

Warmer weather is right around the corner and you may be wondering how to include your preschooler into gardening this year.  Below are a few tips on how to garden with your preschooler.

Prepare

Do some research and find types of plants which will be easier to grow and will thrive in your area.  Decide where your garden will grow best based on the plants you have chosen.  Soften the soil, so your preschooler can easily help dig without becoming frustrated.  You will want to have a way to mark your rows, so the plants do not accidentally get trampled.  This blog suggests creating walking paths using bark, so your preschooler knows where to walk and where to watch for tiny plants when helping or playing in the garden.

Plan

Yes, you did some planning in the preparation step above, but now is your preschooler’s chance to help plan.  Ask your preschooler which fruits or vegetables she wants to grow and help her choose seeds or seedlings.  Incorporate some reading into this venture by checking out gardening books from the library.  Your preschooler will love reading about the process and how plants grow, as well as gain ideas of what types of plants she may want to grow.

Include

Gardening with your preschooler may be a bit overwhelming, but keep in mind he is learning and wants to help.  Find jobs of importance in the garden for him to do on his own.  Remember that it is ok if he picks the peppers before they are fully ripe or over waters the beans.  He is learning self-control and self-regulation through these activities.

Enjoy

As time to harvest nears, involve your preschooler in finding recipes in which to enjoy your home grown produce.  He is sure to love helping find the ripe produce and helping prepare them for mealtime.

Enjoy the time gardening with your preschooler and create memories that will last a lifetime.  Your garden may only last one season, but the skills and memories you are helping your preschooler build will last a lifetime.
