Tips To Have Safe, Wholesome Fun This Halloween With Your Preschooler

Tips To Have Safe, Wholesome Fun This Halloween With Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids the Woodlands, preschool, daycare, childcare

Yikes! Here come the Halloween decorations again, up earlier than ever in grocery stores around the country. Don’t give into despair at the incessant march of time. Instead, try leaning into it and start your Halloween celebrations early! Your preschooler will have a lot of spooky fun, but it’s important to balance that excitement with safety practices. Below are some tips to help your preschooler have a fun and safe Halloween.

Costumes

Safety and fun must be balanced when choosing a costume. If you plan on trick-or-treating, avoid costumes that lack reflective material or flame resistance. Costumes that are too big or are long and flowy can present challenges to a preschooler who is still perfecting their walking technique. Additionally, if your preschooler wants to wear a mask, be sure that they can properly see through the eyeholes.

For those who opt out of going trick-or-treating, you can still enjoy the tradition from your own home. When your doorbell rings, try letting your preschooler divvy out the candy to the onslaught of hungry patrons. They will love the wholesome feeling that comes with giving, in a fun and safe environment.

Trick-or-Treating

If you do decide to take your preschooler trick-or-treating with you, here are some tips to make the escapade go as smoothly as possible. Teach your child to only knock on the doors that have their porch lights on, and acclimate them to the idea that they should not enter a stranger’s home. Halloween is probably not the time to go adventuring to far-out places, so try sticking to the houses you know. It’s always a good idea to bring a flashlight on your walk to better see hazards on the sidewalk and increase visibility.

Jack-O-Lanterns

Carving a pumpkin is messy but fun. Carving a pumpkin with a preschooler? Even messier and even more fun! Here’s how to do it: First, put out a tarp or go outside. Then, let your child hold the pumpkin still as you cut a hole through the top. Once the lid is off, your preschooler can scoop out the innards. Once they have scooped out the inside, provide them with a stencil and let them draw a face on the pumpkin. Carefully cut out the eyes, nose and mouth along the lines, then put a battery-powered light inside. Ta-da! Your very own jack-o-lantern.

Candy

Halloween without candy is, in a word, pointless. As your child digs into what is probably their favorite part of Halloween, make sure to inspect everything they’ve earned while trick-or-treating. Throw away any candy that is damaged or unwrapped, and make sure your child does not eat too much and get sick. Additionally, if they have any food allergies, make sure to confirm that any new candies they try are checked for allergies.

By simply following these safety tips, you can have peace of mind as you celebrate Halloween with your preschooler. Have fun, and make sure you don’t eat too much candy either!
