How Proper Nutrition Translates to Success in Preschool

How Proper Nutrition Translates to Success in Preschool at Kids 'R' Kids the Woodlands, preschool, childcare, daycare

Young children grow at an astonishing rate! Their bodies and brains are constantly growing and developing. For this reason, your preschooler needs a nutrient-dense diet to help promote success in preschool.

Attention

Have you ever tried to pay attention in a meeting with an empty stomach, or after eating a donut and coffee for breakfast? It is more difficult to focus if your body’s physical needs are not met.  Preschoolers are still learning how to focus and attend to activities. You can help reduce distractions (i.e. a rumbly belly) or behavior issues (i.e. hangry or emotional preschooler) by ensuring your preschooler eats a healthy breakfast and is hydrated before dropping her off at preschool in the morning.

Brain Food

As mentioned above, your preschooler’s brain is constantly developing. Your preschooler’s brain will develop in a healthier way by eating a nutrient dense diet, as opposed to processed food. Foods that promote healthy brain development include: eggs, fish, leafy greens (i.e. spinach), and nuts and seeds. These foods are high in nutrients which the brain needs.

Sugary Foods

Sugary or high fat foods can leave your preschooler feeling sluggish and make it more difficult for them to participate in activities needed for learning. If your preschooler fills up on sugary or high fat foods, they may not leave room for the nutrient dense foods that their brain and body need for proper development. Treat your preschooler with a delicious fruit salad or 100% fruit popsicles instead of candy!

Immune System

Not only does a proper diet help your preschooler’s brain and body develop properly and help them to be more attentive in preschool, but it can help them ward off illness. Your preschooler will have a better chance of staying healthy and fighting off all the germs they are exposed to on a daily basis if their body is in its prime, through a healthy diet. Foods high in vitamin C (i.e. citrus fruits) are great for a boost in immunity!
