How to Decide if Your Child is Ready for Preschool

preschool readiness

If you’re starting to think about preschool for your child, that’s probably a sign he’s ready. But if you’re not quite sure if you’re child has met the right milestones for going to preschool, here are a few preschool readiness signs to look for:

Social interaction

As your child interacts with other kids, observe how he responds to them. If your child is eager to join in and participate, he will certainly be ready to join in the fun at preschool. If you see your child is nervous or shy around other kids, it may be she hasn’t spent enough time around other children her age. Preschool is a great opportunity to expose your child to new friends.

Independence

“I want to do it!” may be a frequent phrase uttered from your child! If your daughter insists on completing tasks on her own–getting dressed, throwing trash away– she is ready for preschool. If she is potty trained and can follow a list of directions, she will do well in a preschool class where it is important for all the students to follow the rules.

Adjusts to change

Preschoolers may still need plenty of preparation in order to transition between activities, but preschool can help your child acclimate to changing activities. With the start of preschool, you may find that your child has entered a more clingy stage. Your child will learn to adjust after separation from you at morning drop off, even if it takes a few weeks to adjust.

Communication

If your child can basically communicate what they need and listen to directions, they will be ready for preschool. Preschool teachers are trained to help students along in their communication—teaching them to understand their emotions, needs, and how to use their words.

Many children will be ready for preschool around age 3 or 4, though they may not be at the same stage as their classmates. Your child’s preschool teacher will teach the things she needs to know to be successful in preschool!
