Starting Your Back-to-Preschool Routine

Starting Your Back-to-Preschool Routine at Kids 'R' Kids Suwanee, preschool, daycare, childcare

Is your child singing yes, yes, yes or no, no, no about starting up the school year!? Despite the answer, the start of the new preschool year is still a-comin’!

Here are a few tips for starting your back-to-school preschool routine:

  1. Bring together a family meeting and discuss what needs to be re-established, based on your family’s typical and individual school routines. This family meeting could take place a week (or so) before school starts back up again. You can even talk about aspects of the plan in normal conversations throughout that week, too. Though you will not implement many of these routines until the day preschool starts, it will be important to slowly get your child back on track for at least an ideal bedtime beforehand.
  2. Do a creative activity with what was discussed in the family meeting. You can make a fun and decorative chart showing your child what will need to be done at home to get ready each morning for preschool. (For example, categories can include: eating breakfast, brushing teeth, getting dressed, grabbing the bag, etc.) Another idea is to put their list of responsibilities into a “rap song” that could be sung each morning until your child has the morning routine down.
  3. Before the school year starts, make a visit to your child’s new classroom. This allows your child the opportunity to meet the new teacher, but it also allows for the teacher to help explain the different school-day routines that may help your child feel more comfortable with starting the new school year.
  4. Make school supply shopping be like a “date” with your child. Supply shopping can be more of an adventure than a to-do list or chore. The excitement may help your child be more flexible with the many upcoming routine changes.

Yes, you and your preschooler will soon have some adjustments in routine, yet being prepared and excited can help both you and your child in this returning-to-school process!
