Helping Your Preschooler Develop Healthy Sleep Habits

Helping Your Preschooler Develop Healthy Sleep Habits at Kids 'R' Kids Suwanee, preschool, daycare, childcare

It is no secret that preschoolers have tons of energy.  At the end of the day, you are probably totally drained of all energy, but your little one is ready to play for hours.  It is important to build healthy sleep habits at a young age.  We don’t want to send our little geniuses off to preschool sleepy and cranky, right?

Create a Calm Environment

Turn your child’s room into a serene oasis.  Pull the curtains closed, turn out the lights, and turn on soothing music.  Pull the sheets and blankets back and add their favorite stuffed animal to their bed.  If you want to turn up the spa-factor, you can use some lavender essential oils for added relaxation.

Provide Wind Down Time

Give your child warnings before springing the words “time for bed” on them.  Remind your child bedtime is coming up in thirty minutes and help them choose a calm activity to do until that time.  Warn them another ten minutes before the bedtime routine begins.  This helps their brains wind down and signal to their bodies it is time to relax and get ready for sleep.

Bedtime Routine

Children need routines and actually crave routine and consistency.  It makes them feel safe, secure, and loved.  Turn off all electronics and stimulating devices at least thirty minutes prior to bedtime.  Serve your preschooler a light, healthy snack.  Let your little one choose which pajamas to wear, what stuffed animal to take to bed, and which blankets are needed for the night.  A warm bath and brushing your preschooler’s teeth may be next in your routine.  Finally, end your routine with snuggles, a bedtime story or two, and lots of kisses.  The entire routine should be done with hushed voices and a calm demeanor.

Putting a preschooler to bed can be stressful and tiring.  Breathe and enjoy these moments with your little one.  They won’t last forever and you will surely miss them once your not-so-little-one is putting himself to bed.
